Final season of LOST premieres

Synopsis of what happened in premiere episode

The final season on Lost premiered last night, answering some long-awaited questions -- and of course -- raising a whole set of others.

After the hydrogen bomb detonated at the end of last season, things seemingly went according to plan -- with the characters resuming life on the flight to Los Angeles as though nothing had happened. Soon, an alternate reality, one in which the plan hadn't worked, began to unfold, with life continuing on the island after the detonation.

Juliet died in Sawyer's arms, before she could tell him -- as he later learned -- that their plan had indeed worked. Meanwhile, Jacob visited Hurley and said that Sayid's only chance of survival was to go to a temple. After arriving, they were met by mysterious people who upon hearing Hurley's connection to Jacob, attempted to save Sayid's life. A letter inside the wooden symbol in the guitar case revealed they would be in trouble if Sayid didn't survive.

Despite their efforts, Sayid died. Hurley revealed that Jacob had met his end as well -- sending the temple into a frenzy, apparently to protect them all from the Locke-look-a-like, who is actually the black smoke. During a scuffle between Jack and the guards at the end of the episode, Sayid mysteriously comes back to life.

Meanwhile, as life continues on the plane, we see Kate escape her captor, Jack save Charlie's life and later bond with Locke once he discovers that the body of his father is missing. Jin is detained after customs agents discover a large amount of cash in his suitcase.

At the end of the episode, the Locke-look-a-like knocks out Richard, carrying him to an unknown fate. His true identity (he tells Ben only that he wants to go home) and intentions are perhaps the largest among the many questions we all have.
